Dancing for kids is such an exciting thing. Kids spend their whole lives moving, wriggling, sliding, spinning, exploring, playing – it’s just so instinctive to them. It’s no wonder that children feel so at ease and exhilarated in a dance studio, as it’s such a fantastic, dedicated space where all this creative experimentation is nurtured and encouraged!
There’s a lot of dance classes for kids on the market and deciding the best one for your child can seem like a mammoth job! You want to find a dance class that is more than just about teaching kids to learn new moves. You want an excellent kids dance class. An excellent class develops every aspect of the child through engagement in games, exercises and choreography; giving rewarding positive encouragement and feedback; and encouraging individual expressivity – that’s exactly what we do at Moving Waves.
The list of skills that kids develop through dance training is literally endless. But some of our favourites include: self-expression, leadership, teamwork, self-discipline, confidence and creative thinking. During a dance class friendships are formed and life-long skills that support children beyond the studio are cultivated. The best thing is, they develop all these skills whilst having so much fun and feeling super happy!
Contemporary dance is such a popular class choice for kids at the moment, and we totally get why. It encompasses lots of creativity and technique; is all about self-expression; and can be danced anywhere! So if your kid is looking to brush up on their moves to impress their friends at school or at the next class birthday party, contemporary dance is the class for them. Contemporary dance classes are super creative and energetic, so also perfect for little ones who still have extra energy to burn after a day at school.
Don’t forget, contemporary dance is about individualism too, so as well as learning routines and performances the kids also get a chance to freestyle, which is a great way of practising what they’ve learnt and creating their own cool moves too! If your kids are glued to Oti’s Boogie Beebies, Let’s Dance or The Next Step then get them booked into class – they will absolutely love it!
Moving Waves might be new(-ish) to Camden but we have in fact been running a performing arts and wellness academy in Haringey since 2015! Over the years we’ve worked with hundreds of children and young people aged 3-18, teaching weekly classes and devising performances and shows. You can trust that you're in safe hands with Moving Waves!
Check out some testimonials from our Haringey Academy parents – you can find more on our website too!
“My daughter just loves it! She loves her teacher and can't wait to see he friends every week. Music is fantastic and the price is very reasonable.”
“Age appropriate, fun moves, encourages freestyle. Technically challenging! Happy children.”
It’s because of our success in Haringey that we are able to expand our remit and open our doors in Camden. We are also delighted to be supported by Academy Mews and Young Camden Foundation – both organisations have ensured we’ve had a super welcome to the borough!
Camden has a long, celebrated history and fantastic community spirit. Recognised as one of London’s key cultural hubs, it is famous for its creative energy and is a consistent hive of artistic activity, which makes it an extra special place to take dance classes. The high street is full of creative organisations and venues that have inspired generations of artists, musicians, dancers and performers, and Saint Pancras Association is no different. Nestled just off Camden Market, Academy Mews is a bustling community venue with multiple rooms that are perfect for our contemporary dance classes. Added bonus, whilst you wait for your kid’s class to finish you can relax in the cosy waiting room upstairs, or even treat yourself and explore the abundance of shops, bars and cafes along the high street!
All the dance teachers at Moving Waves are professionals who are super passionate about dance and sharing their skills. Having a passionate teacher is so important – when the children feel the energy and enthusiasm from the teacher, it positively impacts them too! The kids in Camden are especially lucky because they get to learn contemporary dance by Svenja Buhl, a very experienced contemporary dancer and choreographer. Svenja brings a wealth of dance and performance experience to these classes, from performing and directing shows in Germany, Ireland and England, to music videos and visual dance installations!
The beauty of our set up means that you don’t need to commit to a block of classes. Simply join us for a free trial and if your child loves it (which we are confident they will!) then sign up is easy. Opt for either our Level 1 class for kids ages 4-7 (16.00-17.00) or our Level 2 class for kids ages 8-12 (17.15-18.15) – both on Fridays.
As part of our mission to make the arts and their benefits accessible to as many people as possible, we also offer up to two scholarships per term in kind. This entitles dancers to a free term of their favourite class at either our Haringey or Camden Academy. Our friendly team are on hand so if you have any questions about this, just let us know!
